The DeVos family, particularly Betsy and Dick DeVos, are well known for their considerable philanthropic endeavors. Both individuals have also been at the forefront of education reforms in Michigan. Their attribute as reformers is well-accentuated by their past and current roles in the community. Betsy DeVos is known to pursue reforms through several positions in various non-profit organizations. In fact, she is the chairperson of the popular Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation. She sits on several local boards such as Kids Hope USA and the Mars Hill Bible Church among others.

A recent interview with Philanthropy revealed more about Betsy’s role in educational reform. Betsy expressed her delight in the progress made by educational-choice programs. She emphasized her excitement by revealing that nearly 250,000 students are currently enrolled in government funded, private-choice programs in about 17 states plus the District of Columbia.

Betsy and DeVos became involved in educational reform out of the need to help low-income parents or families select suitable schools for their kids. This led Dick DeVos to run for Michigan’s State Board of Education whereby he was elected in 1990. On the other hand, Betsy participated in the inception of a foundation that awarded scholarships to underprivileged families in Michigan. This endeavor was geared by the need to give parents a say on where their children go to school.

According to Betsy, digital learning, although it is still in its infancy, not only makes learning fun but also avails resources that make information accessible instantly. Additionally, she approved homeschooling as another valid option that gives parents the much-needed power over their children’s education.
