Betsy DeVos’ Biography

At the beginning of this year, the President of the United States nominated Betsy DeVos to serve as the secretary of education. Later the U.S. Senate confirmed her nomination and assumed her new role. For many years, DeVos has actively engaged in matters to do with educational reforms in the United States. She has focused mainly on reforms that are useful to underserved kids, in order to help them access quality education similar to kids from wealthy families. Betsy’s mother influenced her interest in education at an early age. This interest was later re-activated when she took her own kids to school and realized there was no equal opportunity for kids to receive high standard education in the U.S.

Previously, DeVos was working as a school mentor in Grand Rapids Public School helping at-risk kids to concentrate on their studies. During that time, Betsy was able to interact with parents, kids and teachers, and her perception towards education changed forever. She became a leader of a movement that empowered parents, and she led the creation of educational choice programs that has been supporting students from 25 states. Before she was confirmed the secretary of education, DeVos was an executive at The Windquest Group, an investment management company. Read her interview with Philantrophy Table.

Betsy DeVos’ Philanthropic Initiatives

Betsy has been on the forefront advocating for the increase of educational choice schools in different states across the United States. Her objective is to eliminate the mindset of majority of people that students go to certain schools depending on the zip codes of their home. Using her movement, Betsy DeVos has been advocating for maximum freedom. She is relying on technological advancement to provide long-term solutions to some of the problems facing the education sector. In fact, kids have the tendency to pick up and learn new technologies very easily. She believes when the right legislation framework are implemented, American kids will enjoy freedom in their studies.

Betsy DeVos and her husband Dick DeVos have been actively donating to various charitable initiatives to support educational choice movement in order to have equality in the education of American kids. Today, through their foundation, the couple has donated millions of dollars to support education of children from less privileged families. More than 250,000 children are benefiting from this program, and the movement is still growing. Many people have realized that traditional public schools are not recording good results and this is leading them to consider taking their kids to schools offering educational choice program. Betsy Devos began her philanthropy work by starting a foundation that sponsored kids from poor family backgrounds. However, they realized the scholarship fund would not address the actual problem, and the idea for education choice program was fronted, and up-to-date it has worked wonders to a large number of kids in the U.S. Visit Betsy’s profile page on

One of the reasons why the United States has been great and in fact doing very well in other aspects of the human capital development is because of people like DeVos. And I think that grademiners should mostly join in the efforts to enable more of the gestures like hers to be multiplied. This can result in all round success in more spheres of our existence as a country and more than our political difference it can help us.
